Scale

For the scale project we had to take an every day object and make it larger than life. After a couple of days brainstorming we got the idea to do a cassette tape and since it was the only idea approved we decided to go with it. The group worked so well together and for the most part every one contributed an equal share in the work and responsibilities. tape is made out of cardboard and a wood frame holds it together. The actual film is made out of window film and the screws are made out of styrofoam. Then we spray painted the whole thing and put the label on for the finishing touch.

I learned a lot from the project. One was make sure you measure several times before cutting anything. Going along with that make sure you have the right measurements. second, use your resources. We just asked around and half of our supplies were given to us. And lastly pick good group members you work well with, our group had similar working habits and we worked amazingly well together.

Texture

For this project we had to pick a piece of art work that we could imitate with different textures. This is the picture I chose by Leonid Afremov, an Italian artist. We had to make out picture look as identical to the real piece as possible useing at least six different texture products. What i used to create the different textures was silk red, orange, and yellow leaves, ribbon, magazines, textured paper, pictures of texture, cloth, and tissue paper.

Color

For this project we had to use six different color schemes: primary, secondary, monochromatic, analogous, complementary, and intermediate. To do this we had to paint the schemes on a 5X5 square and mount them to a black foam board. As you can see I picked the word peace and then the symbol to demonstrate the color schemes. The "P" is analogous, the "E" is monochromatic, the "A" is secondary, the "C" is primary, the other "E" is complementary, and the symbol is intermediate.

Color and culture matters

Color is very important in a culture. It is important to know the culture before you design or create something for the society because you could be sending a message that you do not intend to send. For example, in the painting Giovanni Arnolfini and His Bride ,by Jan Van Eyck, the bride is wearing green. In western culture that seems odd but in the time period green symbolized fertility. However, later on early Christians banned green because it was associated with pagan ceremonies.

It is essential to every designer to know about color in a culture before they design for it. It i were ever to design a program for a wedding in China i would not want to chose white. To the Chinese white is the color of mourning and is not appropriate at a wedding. In India the color white at a wedding symbolizes that the person is inviting widowhood and unhappiness.

Shapes Project

In class we had to pick a theme and make a picture using only shapes to convey the theme. My theme was desert and as you can see i made the cacti and rock formations very boxy. First I chose the materials i would need and then made shapes that look like the real thing to make a picture of theme. After that I cut out the shapes i would be using. My final step was to glue it all on to the paper then clue it on to the black foam bored.

Line

This blog entry we have to write about what we learned in class about line. I learned that line shapes how we see somethings. Some examples would be when the one girl was trying to get her team to guess a raging bull she drew squiggly lines coming from his nose to symbolize angry steam. Another example is when some one was drawing a drive-in theater. He drew a rectangle with two circles and two semi-ovals and then a box and it registered in our brains that is was a big movie screen and a car. Line gives us shapes and forms that turn eventually turn into a picture.

A little bit about me...

My name is Laura and i am a graphic design major.
I am from Tagbilaran, Philippines
What i hope to do with my career is to do promotional videos for missionaries around the world.
my main inspiration would be from observations of every day life and from other artists who are excited about what they do.
I hope this class furthers my understanding about design and helps me explain why i design some of the things i design.
I've always found critiquing someone else's work hard because i know what its like to put so much energy into something that you don't want it to be critiqued.

This picture is of my family and they mean so much to me. As a missionary kid we moved in and out of different cultures and the only thing constant was my family so we are a very close family and thats why i value them.

This second picture is of orphans in Cambodia living with AIDS. I chose this picture because i have a heart for impoverished children in other countries especially orphans and after going on this trip i decided i wanted to be a missionary and help other missionaries show the world how they can help change these children's lives through video promotions.

Remember

Today there are military jets flying high above,
Protecting our freedom and the land we love.
Take time and say a prayer to remember,
That most horrific day last September.
So many loved ones were lost and perished,
God please give strength to the families they cherished.
For all of the people who died and I never met,
I pray that they know ‘We will never forget’
